History Shelley was established in 1904 and named for John F. Shelley who moved to the area in 1885 from American Fork, Utah. He built a store in 1892 and because he needed supplies to build the store, John talked the railroad into stopping just long enough to throw supplies off the train. The railroad started calling this "stop" Shelley.
